UMOJA = UNITY

Unity

We strive to unite as many Black and African American clubs, organizations, businesses, churches, and individuals (while still maintaining their autonomous mission) to utilize and leverage our own resources, in addition to external resources.

Community

We aim to cultivate a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment within our communities for the betterment of the underserved, underrepresented, marginalized, and those whom the effects of prejudice, bias, and systemic racism have impacted.

Empowerment

We seek to amass our collective resources to hold ourselves AND local, regional, and national elected officials and leaders accountable to ensure a high quality of life for Blacks and African Americans in every aspect of everyday living.

Umoja Village is celebrating its 5th Anniversary (Juneteenth) with the launch of the “Unity Works” fundraising campaign. Community members are encouraged to show their support by donating five dollars or more.

The More You Know: School Operating Millage

All meetings of the Aiken County School Board begin at 6:00 p.m. at the District Office (1000 Brookhaven Drive in Aiken), unless otherwise noted below. Those who plan to speak in favor of the proposed budget and tax increases, must sign up at the school district office to have their name placed on the list to speak.

CENTER FOR LIFELONG LEARNING: Over 90 classes will be available this fall

If you’ve been weighing the possibility of taking some classes now that you’re retired, here’s some help to make a case for doing so. I’ve heard several comments from seniors such as “I’m retired — I’m done with classes and learning.” But the speaker obviously hadn’t thought about the positive effects of continuing to seek new knowledge throughout life. Lifelong learning, especially in a classroom setting, offers many advantages for seniors, especially in terms of enhancing brain health and promoting social interaction.
